Bovine Colostrum: What It Is and How It Supports Your Health

Bovine Colostrum: Is it really all it's cracked up to be?

Colostrum popularity has BLOWN UP in the past few years, and for good reason! Here I detail what it is, why it’s amazing, and where you can get it (hint: it’s not from an influencer).

Bovine colostrum is the first milk the mama cow produces when the baby calf is born. Just like humans produce liquid gold, animals do too. Bovine colostrum is naturally rich in immune-supporting proteins, growth factors, antibodies, and nutrients that help newborn calves grow strong and healthy. But guess what – these properties are highly beneficial to us humans too.

Today, many people use bovine colostrum as a supplement because these same compounds may help support gut health, immune balance, recovery, and inflammation. And the best part is it’s a WHOLE FOOD that has no known drug interactions or known toxicity level.

Read on for a simple breakdown of what the research says and how colostrum may support health from a functional nutrition/medicine point of view.

Key Bioactive Compounds in Bovine Colostrum

Studies show that colostrum contains many powerful molecules, including:

  • Immunoglobulins (IgG, IgA, IgM) – immune-supporting antibodies
  • Lactoferrin – supports immune response and may fight harmful microbes
  • Growth factors (IGF-1, TGF-β) – help repair tissue and support healing
  • Proline-rich polypeptides (PRPs) – may help balance the immune system
  • Antioxidants – protect cells from damage

Health Benefits of Colostrum

SUPPORTS GUT HEALTH

Many people use bovine colostrum for gut repair. I recommend it to my patients because it’s a whole food AND it’s super beneficial for the gut lining. Research shows that colostrum may help:

  • Strengthen the gut lining
  • Support healthy intestinal permeability (“leaky gut”)
  • Improve microbiome balance
  • Reduce gut inflammation

Human and animal studies suggest that colostrum may reduce intestinal injury and support faster repair of the gut barrier.

Bottom Line:
Colostrum may be helpful for people with digestive irritation, bloating, diarrhea, or after antibiotic use. In functional nutrition/medicine, it is often used during gut-healing protocols.

HELPS REDUCE INFLAMMATION

Chronic inflammation is one of the biggest drivers of long-term disease. Certain compounds in colostrum, like lactoferrin and PRPs, may help regulate inflammatory pathways.

Research suggests colostrum can:

  • Lower inflammatory markers
  • Support immune balance
  • Protect tissues from inflammation-related damage

Practical takeaway: Colostrum may be useful for people dealing with chronic inflammation, immune imbalance, or recovery from illness or heavy physical stress.

SUPPORTS IMMUNE HEALTH

Colostrum is naturally designed to strengthen a newborn’s immune system—so it’s no surprise it also supports adult immunity.

Benefits shown in research include:

  • Helps the body respond better to new immune challenges
  • May reduce frequency or duration of certain infections
  • Strengthens the protective mucosal immune system in the gut and lungs

Practical takeaway: Colostrum may be helpful during times of stress, travel, or seasonal immune challenges.

MAY SUPPORT ATHLETIC / EXERCISE RECOVERY

Because colostrum includes growth factors and immune-supporting compounds, research has explored benefits for athletes.

Studies suggest colostrum may:

  • Support muscle recovery
  • Reduce intestinal permeability caused by intense exercise
  • Improve performance markers in some cases

Practical takeaway: People who train hard or experience digestive distress from exercise may notice benefits from adding colostrum.

Contraindications

When NOT to take Colostrum

Although colostrum is generally well tolerated, there are situations where it may not be recommended.

Avoid or use only with medical guidance if you have:

  • Hormone-positive cancers (colostrum contains growth factors which may not be appropriate)
  • Milk allergies
  • Severe lactose intolerance (though colostrum is naturally low in lactose, containing only about 250mg per serving)
  • An immune condition requiring immunosuppressive medication such as organ transplants or other conditions (discuss with your provider first)

Our Recommendation

How to Take Colostrum

Always adjust based on your practitioner’s guidance, but here are some general recommendations:

  • Start low (¼–½ serving) and increase as tolerated, up to 1-2 Tbsp, 2x/day
  • Do NOT mix with hot water
  • Do NOT blend in a blender, only stir it into liquids/smoothies etc.
  • Take on an empty stomach for better absorption. But really, just get it in when you can
  • Choose a high-quality, low-heat-processed powder or capsules
  • Look for “first milking” or “high IgG” products

The Brand We Love

I love LOVE the colostrum by GastroDefense. It was founded by Douglas Wyatt, one of the world’s leading authorities on bovine colostrum. He established the gold standard in colostrum processing. They offer a liposomal product that is delivered to the cells more efficiently. And their colostrum is ALWAYS from the first milking of hormone, pesticide, and antibiotic free cows.

Colostrum is definitely an INVESTMENT in your health. Recently, pricing increases have caught many off guard. I hope you find the following comparison helpful. I sure did when I really broke it all down to figure out which brand was best for not only myself, but to recommend to my patients as well. Gram for gram, Gastrodefense is the more affordable and highest quality colostrum you are going to find.

Overall Suggested Functional Nutrition Uses

  • Gut-healing protocols. I also love it for IBS and IBD flares in combination with other therapies/protocols, but be sure to talk with/work with your practitioner for more details and if this is the right thing for YOUR body
  • Immune-support programs – colds in kids especially! Again, check with YOUR provider first.
  • Post-antibiotic restoration
  • Support during athletic training
  • Chronic inflammation support
  • Kids benefit too! Colostrum can also support their immune systems and gut health

Main Takeaway

Colostrum is not a magic cure or magic powder for everything. It is simply a whole food that can help enhance overall health and well being, and play a role in healing the gut.
